Musk Pours $76 Million Into America PAC for Midterm Final Stretch

The tech billionaire’s political arm injected massive funds into the Texas Senate race and digital advertising as election day approaches.

Elon Musk’s personal political committee, America PAC, injected more than $76 million into the midterm election effort during the first two weeks of October. This significant financial boost was reported to the Federal Election Commission on Thursday evening, marking a major escalation in spending as the campaign enters its final phase. The injection of funds underscores the scale of Musk’s direct involvement in shaping the outcome of the upcoming elections.

The financial flow was substantial in both expenditure and liquidity. During that same two-week period, the committee spent nearly $43 million on various campaign activities. Despite the high burn rate, the group entered the final leg of the race holding approximately $47 million in cash. This liquidity allows for rapid deployment of resources in the crucial days leading up to Election Day.

The Texas Senate contest absorbed the largest share of these new funds, receiving $15.2 million. This amount represents double the total amount the committee spent in that state during the summer months. Of this Texas-specific allocation, $12.4 million was directed toward attacking Democratic candidate James Talarico, while $2.8 million was used to promote Republican Ken Paxton. Subsequent daily filings indicate that an additional $9.1 million was spent against Talarico, bringing the total cycle spending against him to nearly $28 million. This figure accounts for roughly 40 percent of everything America PAC has spent on supporting or opposing candidates this cycle.

The committee also shifted its strategy toward digital channels. In the same two-week window, it spent $11.4 million on online ads. This digital expenditure was nearly equivalent to the combined costs of mail and texting campaigns, signaling a pivot toward faster, more targeted online messaging. Musk, who has major corporate operations in Texas, including Tesla and SpaceX, has also been vocal about the race online. He recently described Talarico as having something "deeply wrong" and called him "a creep," while amplifying claims about the candidate’s mental health history. Talarico responded by criticizing a system that allows a "trillionaire to buy his own personal US Senator."

The overall financial commitment from Musk has reached historic levels. According to an analysis of FEC filings, he has contributed more than $445 million to Republican political groups this election cycle, making him the largest known individual donor in the midterms. More than $165 million of that total has gone specifically to America PAC since July. The committee declined to comment on the new filings.

The race in Texas remains closely contested. A recent poll by Emerson College, conducted from October 17 to 19 among 1,000 likely voters, showed Talarico leading by two points, with 48 percent support compared to Paxton’s 46 percent. This margin falls within the poll’s three-point margin of error, indicating a toss-up situation. The outcome is critical because it determines which party holds key legislative power.

The stakes for Musk extend beyond a single state seat. If Democrats secure control of the House, committee leaders have signaled intentions to investigate his role in the Department of Government Efficiency, his companies’ federal contracts, and potential conflicts of interest. California Representative Zoe Lofgren described the number of such conflicts as "astounding." Unified Democratic control of Congress would pose an even greater challenge for his business interests.

Silicon Valley Democrats have also targeted specific aspects of Musk’s business empire. On Friday, Representatives Sam Liccardo, Jimmy Panetta, and Ro Khanna sent a letter to the White House demanding an investigation into restrictions on SpaceX’s Starshield satellite service in Ukraine. They vowed that the next Congress would closely scrutinize federal funding awarded to Musk’s businesses, linking the midterm outcome directly to the regulatory environment for his companies.
