AI Backers See Massive Returns Ahead of Anthropic Listing
Early and late-stage investors in Anthropic are poised for significant financial gains as the company prepares for a public offering valued at up to $2 trillion.

The impending public listing of Anthropic promises to redefine the wealth landscape for some of the most prominent figures in the technology sector.
Market expectations suggest the company will go public later this year with a valuation reaching as high as $2 trillion. Even at its most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the stakes held by venture capitalists and early supporters already represent billions of dollars in equity. This trajectory indicates that the upcoming IPO will likely serve as a substantial financial windfall for both those who invested during the startup's earliest phases and those who joined later.
The disparity in entry points has resulted in varying degrees of immediate gain. Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, entered the market during Anthropic's Series A round in 2021. At that time, the company was valued at $461 million. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt currently holds approximately 1% of the company, a position that is valued at nearly $10 billion under the current private valuation structure.
Late-stage investors have also seen their capital appreciate significantly, though from a much higher baseline. Iconiq, an investment firm, provided $6 billion to Anthropic last year when the valuation stood at $183 billion. That substantial bet has since grown to a value of $17 billion. If the IPO materializes at the higher end of projected valuations, this position could potentially double in value again.
Menlo Ventures, which led the company's Series D funding, has committed over $1 billion to Anthropic over time. That accumulation of shares is currently worth approximately $14 billion. Meanwhile, Sequoia Capital made its first investment in the AI lab earlier this year, entering at a $380 billion valuation. Its $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial capital commitment.
Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, represents another tier of growth. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and has since added another $400 million to its stake. This combined investment now holds a value in the billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to establish a new venture capital entity, though the firm's portfolio position remains intact.
The most dramatic appreciation in value has occurred for Spark Capital, the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million during the 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at just $5 billion. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion, highlighting the explosive growth potential of early positions in the leading AI laboratory.
These figures underscore the broader implications of the current AI boom for private markets. As Anthropic moves toward its public debut, the financial outcomes for its backers will provide a clear benchmark for the industry's valuation trends. The spread between the lowest and highest entry points demonstrates how timing and stage of investment continue to dictate return profiles in high-growth technology sectors.
