OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of closing a historic private funding round that could push its valuation past the $1 trillion mark.
Sources indicate the company is in advanced negotiations to raise up to $30 billion at a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion. This move suggests the AI lab may prioritize further private capital over an immediate public offering. The round is being led by investment firm Coatue, alongside investors from the United Arab Emirates.
The reported valuation is slightly lower than previous estimates but still represents a massive leap for the industry. A month ago, reports indicated OpenAI was seeking $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation. While terms are currently under negotiation and could shift, the current figures position the company as a titan of the private sector.
A significant component of this deal involves a strategic partnership with the UAE. Beyond the cash injection, the funding is expected to be coupled with an agreement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from the region. This infrastructure deal is critical for the lab’s ongoing expansion and model training needs. OpenAI has declined to comment on the specifics of the negotiations.
If OpenAI successfully commands a valuation exceeding $1 trillion in this round, it will shatter records to become the most valuable private company in history. This milestone would not only cement its dominance in the private market but also set an extremely high bar for its upcoming Initial Public Offering. The company previously filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June, following a March funding round that valued the ChatGPT maker at $852 billion on a post-money basis.
The context of this raise is heavily influenced by the competitive landscape in the AI sector. OpenAI’s last major capital raise in March valued the company at $852 billion post-money. The new round aims to bridge the gap between that figure and the anticipated public debut. By securing $30 billion now, the company aims to strengthen its balance sheet before entering the public markets.
This move also has direct implications for its primary rival, Anthropic. Many industry observers believe Anthropic’s IPO is closer to materializing than OpenAI’s. Recent reports suggest that Anthropic could file its public S-1 document at any moment. The timing of these filings and funding rounds is creating a race to the top in the AI sector.
Anthropic is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public debut, according to CNBC. This target is significantly higher than the $1.25 trillion pre-money figure currently discussed for OpenAI. In May, Anthropic raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation, a round many believed would be its last major private injection before going public. Like OpenAI, Anthropic also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June, setting the stage for a potential dual public market entry for the leading AI labs.
